Todd Munson Mark AlbrechtSnackboy's Words of Wisdom |
September 2002 guest At the latest Nebraska Coast Connection salon... Tony Moton's spec script "Buck Naked: A True American Tragedy" were presented. Performing the reading were Korey Kneck, Holly Lewis, Sarah Mahoney, Michael Minor, and Chad Siebert. "Buck Naked: A True American Tragedy" is the bio-pic of musician Phil Bury, who attempts to bring his new music style, which he calls "pornobilly", to the masses. The scene performed involves Phil's bittersweet date with Beth, a nude figure model from an art class. After attending a concert together, Beth seizes the moment to have sex with the band's lead singer, leaving Phil to reconsider joining a band to get his own music back on track. After the scene was performed, a lively discussing with the writer, Tony Moton, began. Topics ranged from Tony's inspiration to write this story to the necessity for acquiring the rights (from Phil's estate) prior to shopping the script. Next, Todd Munson practiced some stand-up comedy on the group as preparation for an upcoming gig at The Comedy Store. Todd's irreverent viewpoint had the group laughing throughout his set. Immediately following Todd's routine, the second screenplay scene reading was performed. Scenes from Mark Albrecht's "The Knitting Club" were performed by Holly Lewis, Sarah Mahoney, Jeff Patterson, and David Rees. "The Knitting Club" is a dramady involving housewives in a small Nebraska town who are taken for granted by their husbands. Ultimately the wives form a fictitious club as a front for their becoming Las Vegas escorts. The scene performed details the troubled courtship and relationship of one of the couples, leading the wife to ultimately decide to join "the knitting club". Discussion topics for this scene included the pit-falls of developing morally questionable protagonists, targeting the proper genre (drama vs. comedy vs. dark comedy, etc.) for a story, and the genesis of ideas for scripts. The script readings were the basis of further discussions that continued into the evening. And, just in case you missed it, "Snackboy's Words of Wisdom" for this month: "You should never try to teach a pig to sing. It is frustrating for you, and it annoys the pig."
